Built in 1850, the mill was the second of two textile mills developed by Elisha Harris, a former governor of Rhode Island, on land that he purchased in the early 1820s along the North Branch of the Pawtuxet River in Coventry, Rhode Island. The Harris Mill later produced book cloth for Interlaken Mills, Inc, one of the nation's largest suppliers of the cloth used by the publishing industry. In 1900, Interlaken Mills purchased the Harris Mill and the mill remained in operation until it was closed by Interlaken Mills, Inc
